Bath-to-shower conversions
Bath-to-shower conversions in Glasgow & Renfrewshire
A bath-to-shower conversion takes out your old bath and fits a shower in the same space. Glasgow Bathroom Fitter carries out bath-to-shower conversions across Glasgow and Renfrewshire, fitting either a low-profile shower tray with a frameless glass panel or a step-free, level-access floor. Most conversions take 2 to 3 days, and you get a fixed-price written quote after a free survey.
Your options
Tray or level-access floor: what should replace your bath?
The space your bath leaves can take either a low-profile shower tray or a level-access floor. A tray is quicker and suits most homes, while a level-access floor removes the step completely.
| Feature | Low-profile tray | Level-access floor |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A slim tray, often the length of the old bath | A step-free floor, waterproofed like a wet room |
| Step into the shower | A low step | None |
| Floor work | Little: the tray sits on the existing floor | The floor is tanked and formed with a fall to the drain |
| Fitting time | Usually 2 to 3 days | Usually longer, because of the waterproofing |
| Best for | Most homes and budgets | Anyone who needs fully step-free showering |
Keep or replace?
Should you replace your bath with a shower?
Replacing your bath with a shower makes sense if you rarely use the bath, but in a family home with only one bathroom it is often worth keeping a bath somewhere in the house.
When a shower makes sense
A shower is the better choice if nobody in the home uses the bath, if stepping over the bath side has become difficult, or if you want more space in a small bathroom. A walk-in shower is quicker to use day to day and easier to clean than a shower over a bath.
When to keep a bath
Checkatrade and Homebuilding & Renovating both point out that family houses are still expected to have a bath, so removing the only one can put some buyers off. If you plan to sell, consider keeping a bath in the main bathroom and adding a shower elsewhere, for example with our en-suite installation service.
How it works
How a bath-to-shower conversion works
A bath-to-shower conversion follows a short, set order, and most are finished in 2 to 3 days.
- 1. Free survey: we check the space, the waste route, your water system and the walls and floor around the bath.
- 2. Fixed-price quote: you get a written quote that shows exactly what is included, including any making good.
- 3. Bath out: our fitters remove the old bath, panel and tiles around it.
- 4. Plumbing: the waste and supply pipes are adapted for the new shower.
- 5. Tray or floor: we fit the low-profile tray, or tank the floor and form the fall for a level-access shower.
- 6. Walls, glass and shower: tiles or panels go up, the frameless glass panel is fitted and the shower is connected.
- 7. Finish and handover: any agreed making good is completed and we walk you through your new shower.
Safer bathing
Bath-to-shower conversions for safer bathing
Swapping a bath for a shower is one of the simplest ways to make bathing safer, because you no longer have to step over the bath side. We also fit wider accessible bathroom adaptations.
Easier, safer access
A low-profile tray leaves only a low step, and a level-access floor removes the step completely. A thermostatic mixer keeps the water at a steady temperature, and a fold-down seat and grab rails can be added inside the shower.
Help with the cost
If the conversion is needed because of a disability, your council may help. Under Scotland's Scheme of Assistance, councils must give a grant of at least 80% for essential adaptations after an occupational therapist assessment, and Glasgow offers 100% to people who meet certain benefit criteria. Read our Scheme of Assistance grants guide and VAT relief guide.

Flats and tenements
Converting a bath in a flat or tenement
Yes, we convert baths to showers in flats and tenement buildings, including upper floors.
Upper floors
A low-profile tray sits on the existing floor, so it is the simplest option upstairs. A level-access floor on an upper floor needs a rigid deck over the timber joists before tanking, which we check at the survey.
Tenement flats
Tenement bathrooms often have a shared soil stack and older joists, which affect where the shower waste can run. Read about our tenement bathroom renovation service for how we plan around them.
Pricing
How much does a bath-to-shower conversion cost?
The cost of a bath-to-shower conversion depends on what replaces the bath and how much of the room needs finishing, so we give every customer a competitive, fixed-price written quote after a free survey.
What changes the price
- Tray or level-access floor: a level-access floor needs tanking and more floor work.
- Shower type: electric showers need a dedicated circuit; power showers need a pump.
- Wall finish: tiling takes longer than waterproof wall panels.
- Making good: repairs to the walls and floor where the bath stood, agreed at the survey.
- Plumbing changes: moving the waste or supply pipes adds work.
- Extras: a fold-down seat, grab rails or a heated towel rail.

How long does a bath-to-shower conversion take?
Most bath-to-shower conversions take 2 to 3 days. That covers removing the bath, adapting the plumbing, fitting the tray, glass and shower, and finishing the walls. A level-access floor usually takes longer, because the floor has to be waterproofed and shaped to the drain. If the conversion is part of a full bathroom renovation, the whole job usually takes 5 to 10 working days.
Will removing my bath devalue my house?
It can, depending on the home. Checkatrade and Homebuilding & Renovating both note that family houses are still expected to have a bath, so removing the only one may put some buyers off. In a flat, a bungalow or a home with a second bathroom, a shower often makes more sense. If you plan to sell soon, keeping one bath somewhere in the house is the safer choice.
Can I have a shower without a step where my bath was?
Yes. Instead of a tray, we can fit a level-access floor, where the floor is waterproofed and shaped with a gentle fall to a drain, so there is no step at all. It takes longer than fitting a tray and needs more floor work, especially on an upper floor. We check your floor at the survey and explain which option suits your home and budget.
What happens to the wall and floor where the bath was?
Taking out a bath often leaves untiled wall and unfinished floor behind it. What is needed depends on your room, so we agree the making good at the free survey and show it clearly on your written quote. That way you know exactly what will be finished, whether that is new tiles or panels around the shower or repairs to the floor.
What type of shower can you fit?
We fit electric, thermostatic mixer and power showers. A mixer suits combi boilers and mains-pressure systems, an electric shower heats cold mains water itself, and a power shower boosts low pressure on tank-fed systems. Electric showers need their own circuit, which a registered electrician we work with fits and certifies. We check your water system and pressure at the survey and recommend the best match.
Can you add grab rails and a seat?
Yes, a fold-down shower seat and grab rails can be added as part of your bath-to-shower conversion. They make showering safer and more comfortable for anyone with limited mobility, and they are easier to fit while the walls are open. We talk through where they should go at the free survey, so they suit the person who will use the shower.
Can I use my bathroom during the conversion?
You will not be able to use the shower while it is being fitted, which usually takes 2 to 3 days. We aim to leave you with a working toilet each evening wherever possible, and the basin is usually unaffected. If your home has a second bathroom or a separate toilet, the work is even easier to live with. We talk through the plan at your survey.
Can I get help with the cost of a bath-to-shower conversion?
If you need the conversion because of a disability, you may qualify for help. Councils in Scotland must give a grant of at least 80% towards essential adaptations after an occupational therapist assessment, and Glasgow offers 100% to people who meet certain benefit criteria. Some work for disabled people can also be zero-rated for VAT. Contact your council's occupational therapy service to start.
