Costs and planning
How much does a bathroom renovation cost?
A full bathroom renovation in the UK usually costs several thousand pounds, and Checkatrade puts a typical supply-and-fit job at about £5,500 to £8,000. The real price depends on the size of the room, whether the layout changes, the products you choose and what is found behind the old tiles. This guide explains each cost and how to compare quotes.
What do published UK figures say?
Cost guides from trade-review websites give a useful starting point, but they are national averages, not quotes. These are the figures published in 2026:
| Source | What it says | Covers |
|---|---|---|
| Checkatrade | £5,500 to £8,000 for a full installation, about £7,000 on average | Supply and fit, materials included |
| Checkatrade | £600 to £1,000 to remove an old bathroom | Strip-out only |
| MyJobQuote | Around £7,000 on average | A new bathroom installed |
These are other organisations' national figures, not our prices. We do not publish set prices, because every bathroom is different. You get a fixed-price written quote after a free survey.
What makes a bathroom cost more or less?
Six things move the price more than anything else:
- Room size: more wall and floor to strip, board, waterproof and tile.
- Layout changes: moving the toilet, bath or shower means new pipework and drainage.
- Products: a basic suite costs far less than a freestanding bath, concealed shower or wall-hung toilet.
- Tiles: large-format and patterned tiles take longer to lay than standard tiles or wall panels.
- Hidden problems: rotten joists, damaged plaster or old pipework found during the strip-out.
- Access: upper-floor tenement flats and tight stairwells take more planning and carrying.
Supply and fit or fit-only?
With supply and fit, your fitter sources the products and the quote covers everything. With fit-only, you buy the products and pay only for the fitting. Our supply and fit vs fit-only guide compares both. Either way, the labour, strip-out, waste removal and making good are a large part of the total.
How do you compare bathroom quotes?
Cheaper is not always cheaper. Two quotes for the same bathroom can differ because one includes the strip-out, skip, waterproofing, tiling and electrics and the other does not. Ask each fitter for a written, itemised quote and check what it leaves out. Our bathroom quote checklist lists what to look for.
How do we price a bathroom?
We visit for a free survey, measure the room, check the walls, floor and plumbing, and talk through what you want. You then get a competitive, fixed-price written quote. The price only changes if you change the plan, or if we find a hidden problem after the strip-out, in which case we stop, show you and only carry on once you agree a fixed price. How much does a new bathroom cost in Glasgow?
There is no single price, because it depends on the room and the products. National cost guides such as Checkatrade put a typical supply-and-fit bathroom at around £5,500 to £8,000, but prices in Glasgow and Renfrewshire vary with the job. The only way to know your cost is a written quote after a survey. Ours is free and gives you a fixed price.
Why do bathroom quotes vary so much?
Quotes often cover different amounts of work. One may include the strip-out, skip, waterproofing, tiling, electrics and making good, while another lists only the fitting. Products and tiles also make a big difference. Always compare written, itemised quotes for the same specification, and ask what happens if a hidden problem is found after the old bathroom comes out. A fixed price protects you more than a low estimate.
Do you charge VAT on bathroom work?
No. Glasgow Bathroom Fitter is not VAT registered, so no VAT is added to our quotes or invoices. When you compare quotes, check whether other prices include VAT or have it added on top, because 20% makes a large difference to the total. The price on our written quote is the price you pay for the work it describes. There are no hidden extras.
Can a bathroom cost more than the quote?
With us, only if you change the plan or a hidden problem is found once the old bathroom is removed, such as rotten joists. If that happens, we stop, show you the problem and give you a fixed price to put it right, and we only carry on once you agree. Ask any fitter how they handle this before you sign.
