Bathroom quote checklist: what should a good quote include?
A good bathroom quote is written, itemised and specific, so you can see exactly what you are paying for and compare it fairly with others. Many price differences come from what a quote leaves out, such as the strip-out, waterproofing, electrics or making good. Use this checklist to read any bathroom quote before you sign.
What should the quote include?
| Item | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Strip-out and waste | Who removes the old bathroom, and is the skip included? |
| Products | Exactly which suite, shower, taps and tiles, or whether you supply them |
| Plumbing | Any changes to pipework or drainage |
| Walls and floor | Boarding, plastering, levelling and waterproofing |
| Tiling and flooring | The area covered and the type of tile |
| Electrics | Lighting, fan, shower circuit and who certifies it |
| Making good and decorating | What is finished, and what is left to you |
| Price and payment | Fixed or estimated, deposit and when the balance is due |
| Timescale and guarantee | How long, and what the guarantee covers |
Questions to ask before you sign
- Is this a fixed price or an estimate?
- What happens if a hidden problem is found after the strip-out?
- Does the price include VAT, or is VAT added on top?
- Who does the electrical work, and will I get a certificate?
- Will I have a working toilet during the work?
- Does the job need a building warrant, and who handles it?
Red flags
- A price given over the phone without a survey.
- A one-line quote with no breakdown.
- A request for most of the money up front.
- No written guarantee, or no clear contact details.

Should a bathroom quote be fixed price?
Ideally, yes. A fixed-price written quote tells you exactly what the work will cost, while an estimate can change. Ask how the fitter handles hidden problems found after the old bathroom is removed. With us, we stop, show you, give you a fixed price to put it right and only carry on once you agree, so the price never changes without your say.
How many bathroom quotes should I get?
Two or three written quotes for the same specification is usually enough to compare prices and approaches. Make sure each quote covers the same work, such as the strip-out, waterproofing, tiling and electrics, otherwise the cheapest may simply leave things out. Compare the guarantee, the timescale and how each fitter deals with surprises. A clear written quote makes this much easier to do fairly.
How much deposit should I pay for a bathroom?
There is no fixed rule, but be wary of anyone asking for most of the price up front. A deposit to secure your installation date, with the balance paid when the bathroom is complete, is a fair arrangement. With us, you pay a deposit to book the date and the balance on completion, and the amount is shown on your written quote.
What should not be missing from a bathroom quote?
The strip-out and waste removal, any plumbing or drainage changes, wall and floor preparation, waterproofing in wet areas, tiling, electrics with a certificate, and making good. If any of these are missing, ask whether they are included or will be charged later. A clear quote also states the timescale, payment terms and guarantee. Missing items are the most common cause of a bill growing later.
