How to choose a bathroom fitter: the checks that matter

The right bathroom fitter gives you a written, fixed-price quote after visiting your home, explains who will do each part of the job, offers a written guarantee and has reviews you can check. This guide lists the checks that matter most, the questions to ask and the warning signs to walk away from, so you can hire with confidence.

Questions to ask

  • Will your own team do the work, and who manages the job day to day?
  • How long will it take, and will I have a working toilet each evening?
  • What happens if you find a problem behind the tiles?
  • Does the job need a building warrant, and who applies for it?
  • When do I pay the deposit and the balance?

Warning signs

  • Pressure to sign on the day, or a discount that ends today.
  • A request for most of the money before work starts.
  • No written quote, or a quote with no breakdown.
  • Reviews you cannot find anywhere else.

Trade membership sites

Sites such as Checkatrade and TrustATrader list local trades and publish reviews from their customers, which can help you check a fitter's history. Read a range of reviews, including recent ones, rather than relying on the star rating alone. Our bathroom quote checklist helps you compare quotes.

How do I find a good bathroom fitter near me?

Start with fitters who cover your area and have reviews on more than one site, such as Google and a trade membership site. Ask two or three of them to survey the room and give you a written, itemised quote. Compare what each quote includes, the guarantee and the timescale, not just the price, and ask how they handle hidden problems.

Should a bathroom fitter visit before quoting?

Yes. A fitter needs to see the room, measure it and check the walls, floor, plumbing and drainage before giving a reliable price. A quote given over the phone is a guess, and it is likely to change once work starts. Our survey is free, and the quote that follows is a fixed price. A survey also lets you ask your questions face to face.

Do bathroom fitters need to be registered?

There is no single register for bathroom fitters, but electrical work in a bathroom should be done and certified by a registered electrician, and gas work must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Ask who will do each part of the job and what certificates you will receive when it is finished. Keep all certificates with your home's paperwork for when you sell.

What guarantee should a bathroom fitter give?

Look for a written workmanship guarantee that says how long it lasts and what it covers. Products such as showers and taps are usually covered separately by their manufacturer's warranty. Our 2-year workmanship guarantee starts on the day the job is finished, and because we manage the whole job, you deal with us if anything needs looking at. Ask for the guarantee in writing.
